Re: Backup on wrong HDD - restore possible?

I guess you had it set to 'delete from Destination if not present on Source'? Oops.

Files that are deleted are deleted the same way as Windows does - marked 'OK to overwrite' but otherwise untouched. The problem is that the profile has likely gone on to start copying stuff from Source, which may indeed have overwritten some, most or all of them, depending how far it got.

The only way to be sure is to try an Undelete utility. Ours (UndeleteOnClick) has the functionality to show you - without paying for the software yet - how many files can probably be retrieved, but only permit undelete of files less than 40KB until registered (paid for). You are obviously at liberty to try other software to see if it does the same (and agrees on probability of success...).

Important Information

It is not possible to guarantee that UndeleteOnClick will be successful in recovering your deleted files. If you wish to recover a deleted file now we strongly recommend that you do not read, write, change or delete any more files on that disk, or defragment it.

Be aware that a file may appear to be recoverable but may turn out to be corrupted or unreadable. This is not a shortfall in the performance of UndeleteOnClick but a result of the way the Windows operating system handles deleted files.

There are also data recovery companies that attempt to recover files that have been inadvertently deleted from computer disks. Also, other software exists, obviously.

It's probably not a good time to mention it, but only having one copy of such valuable files on one device is maybe not a good idea...
