Apple confirms iCloud won't offer iTunes streaming to iOS

The iTunes Match beta opened up to developers yesterday, and in case you were somehow under the impression that it actually offered streaming of music to your iOS device, you're mistaken. Apple has confirmed, because apparently there was confusion, that iTunes Match doesn't stream music. Instead, the $24.99 a year that you will pay for the service means that any music you download from anywhere will get "activated" as purchased in iTunes, and then you can download that music to any iOS device or Mac that you happen to have. That's still an actual file that will need actual space on the hard drive.

Apple says that purchased music can be listened to while it's being downloaded, but it's not like you can have your iPhone full of apps and then still listen to streaming music. In that sense, iTunes Match is more of a sync-ing service than an actual streaming setup.

It's too bad -- I'd much rather have Pandora-like access to my music library from anywhere without having to haul all of those files around on my app-filled iPhone. And while you think that distinction might be the issue of some record company's legal text, it's actually an Apple decision, according to the record companies. Apple apparently wants this music to be tied to iTunes, and thus to actual files on your devices. A streaming service could too easily be brought out to other mediums like browsers (which is where Pandora started, incidentally), and thus separated from Apple devices in general.

That seems sort of selfish on Apple's part -- I would hope the ideal is that I have access to my music on iTunes all the time, not just when I'm on Apple devices. But for now, this is the way it's done. If you pay up for iTunes Match, you still get all of the service's benefits, but you don't get streaming of your files to or from anywhere.

Update: There's some confusion over the word "streaming" here. Streaming, as we're using it, means listening to music without actually downloading it on to your device. This is possible on a Mac with iTunes using the new iTunes Match service (just like it is while sharing a library on Wi-Fi). But it is not possible on an iOS device, even with iTunes Match -- you must download the song to listen to it. You can listen to it while it's downloading, but there will be a file that will take up space on your iOS device.

Software patents: foolish business | Editorial

Companies find it more attractive to make money suing each other for infringement than actually making things

Most people understand the origins and rationale of ordinary industrial patents. They give, say, a pharmaceutical company which has spent a fortune developing a new drug a window to profit from its investment before the rest of the world can make cheaper versions. But software patents, though legally similar, are very different in practice. Google's $12.5bn purchase of Motorola's mobile phone activities last week caused a stir in the business and technology worlds alike, because the reason for it was not to acquire Motorola's phones but its portfolio of up to 17,000 "software patents", which have become the gold dust of the digital age.

Patents are now a multibillion-dollar industry in which companies find it more attractive to make money suing each other for infringement than actually making things. Until the mid-1990s the computer industry ? including Microsoft ? was opposed to such licensing. This was mainly because the industry was so innovative without the protection of patents, which in any case involved often quite trivial advances in technology that were regarded as a standard part of an engineer's work.

Then temptation reared its head. Corporate lawyers realised that they could sue others for infringing patents often purchased as a job lot. They were joined by "troll" companies formed just to buy up patents and sue companies and developers, knowing that most would settle rather than face the huge cost of hiring defence lawyers. Today the corporations that formerly opposed patents are in an arms race to acquire them. Microsoft has amassed a vast patent arsenal and can charge a manufacturer like HTC a reported $5 for every phone it sells ? even though the Android system (developed by Google) used in HTC phones is "open source" and supposedly available to everyone. With hundreds, if not thousands, of patents now inside a mobile phone it is almost impossible not to infringe some patent in some way. Meanwhile Google, faced with its rivals vacuuming up all the patents in sight, has been forced to buy its own portfolio in self-defence.

Patents were supposed to protect innovation. Now they risk throttling it. Such acquisitions may drag technology companies ever further from their original core competences. Academic research by the Berkman Center for Internet and Society has found that software patents have provided no net benefit to the software industry, let alone to society as a whole. Tragically, because so many corporations which formerly opposed software patents have now joined the system, an effective solution will be harder to find. Once again consumers are pitted against the corporations. Where are the regulators when they are needed?

IE8 causing a 3-day time differential?

Greetings.
I'm brand-new to this forum, so please treat me gently...?

SyncBack v3.2.26.0
OS: WinXP Professional SP3
Browser: Internet Explorer 8 (8.0.6001.18702)
Security: Zone Alarm Security Suite: 10.0.250.000

OK - so here goes nothing...

I've been using SyncBack for quite a while now (2+ years), with NO issues. But due to an update by my security software supplier (Checkpoint / ZASS), it became necessary to update my IE browser from IE7 to IE8.

No difference in hardware, and yet all of a sudden my "Favorites" folder takes ages to back-up.

Further research showed that there seems to be EXACTLY a 3 DAY difference between the Source and the Destination folders' time & date stamps. And I mean EXACTLY 3 days - to the millisecond.

How weird?

I have searched this forum and also the web for answers - and this syndrome has been mentioned sporadically, but never fully explained. Or maybe I haven't found the correct site / page...?

Whatever, the "Favorites" Folder is the ONLY folder affected.

All OTHER folders AND files are NOT affected, and all back-up as previously experienced with NO issues - all time-and-date stamps are valid, and only modified data is backed-up.

One back-up is via a router on a LAN to a laptop (also with IE8 and WinXP), whilst the other is via USB to an External HD.
BOTH back-ups are affected, but again ONLY with the "Favorites" folder. And it doesn't matter whether I choose to select a group, or a single task within that group to back-up.

All 3 relevant HDs are NTFS, therefore the "FAT filesystems is accurate only to within 2 seconds" issue is, I believe, irrelevant here.

This has only happened since I installed IE8.

This also only seems to happen AFTER access to the Internet is shut-down / interrupted (router and modem reboot), but whilst the EXD and PCs are still switched on.

I've read on this forum that the SyncBack Freeware (and therefore the support) may soon be terminated. Shame, IMHO.
But if I BUY the SE version, will this problem disappear...?

Or is this an IE8 "NTFS records times on disk in UTC(GMT)" issue, caused by being orphaned from the Internet clock for short periods?
In which case, does SyncBack SE bypass / ignore / deal with this hiccup?

Any help gratefully appreciated.

MacBook Air begins to sell in China

Hot on the heels of last Friday's predictions by analyst Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities, the MacBook Air has gone on sale in China this week. According to MacWorld, all four versions of the latest mid-2011 MacBook Air went on sale in China this week, though there are dispatch delays of between five and eleven working days, depending on which model is ordered.

In a note to clients last week White said, "The new MacBook Air is poised to be a big hit in the Greater China region as more consumers can increasingly afford to own a PC, Apple fever is gaining momentum in the region and there is no laptop product on the market with the characteristics of the new MacBook Air."

With Mac sales already booming in Asia, it's safe to say that the latest MacBook Air will most certainly be a hit in China.

Android tablet software: a fresh look at Honeycomb app hits and misses

The first Honeycomb-based tablet, the Motorola Xoom, was released towards the end of February. In our review of the device, we highlighted a handful of well-designed applications that fit the form factor. The number of third-party tablet applications for Android is still small compared to the iPad, but it's growing modestly.

In the six months that have passed since the launch of the Xoom, the Android tablet application ecosystem has seen some nice additions. There are, however, still a lot of missing pieces. In this article, we will take a brief look at some of the new apps and we will discuss some of the gaps that are still waiting to be filled.

DirecTV working on 'Nomad,' may provide streaming to iOS

Engadget recently found a teaser page on the DirecTV website that speaks about a "Nomad," a little box that promises to take your movies and TV from your home DVR out to the rest of the world (no relation, supposedly, to my favorite portable game console, the Sega Nomad). Details are slim, but it sounds very much like the Slingbox, in that it will take all kinds of signals from DirecTV, and send them out to all kinds of other mobile devices. In other words, DirecTV subscribers may soon have a way to watch their television service from anywhere right on their iOS device.

Gizmolovers has a whole bunch of information on the service, including that the box might possibly cost as much as $150 on its own. And unfortunately, there's no official word on this at all, which means no actual date to wait or even hope for just yet. But stay tuned, DirecTV subscribers -- you may end up watching TV on your iPad through that service sooner than you think.

Hewlett-Packard launches 6bn takeover bid for Autonomy

UK-based search software company confirms approach from US technology multinational

British software group Autonomy Corporation has received a $10bn (6bn) takeover bid from technology multinational Hewlett-Packard.

The approach, which was confirmed on Thursday evening by Autonomy, would represent a 70% premium to its market capitalisation of 3.5bn. Hewlett-Packard is also reported to be planning a spin-off of its personal computer business.

In March, Lo Apotheker, HP's chief executive, declared he would shift the business away from manufacturing hardware towards cloud computing ? offering software and services over the internet. Autonomy specialises in "unstructured" search for big companies, allowing them to trawl through their own databases and seek out content from emails, phone calls and video, finding information which can be used to help detect fraud or ensure legal compliance.

Like HP, it has also moved into cloud computing. It now stores data on behalf of its clients, who include Coca-Cola, Nestl and the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Earlier this year, the Cambridge- based company spent $380m in buying a digital archiving business from storage company Iron Mountain.

Autonomy was co-founded in 1996 by Mike Lynch, who remains in control as chief executive. Lynch has criticised London analysts, complaining that a lack of understanding of the software business has left Autonomy's shares undervalued. He was undoubtedly rattled last summer when Deutsche bank analyst Marc Geall, a former divisional manager and then head of investor relations at Autonomy, criticised his management style.

In an extensive overview of the company, Geall wrote: "The management structure, control and systems at Autonomy are more representative of a start-up than a major global player. The senior management team is talented but lacks bandwidth. This can lead to some decision paralysis."

The company reported full-year revenues for 2010 of $870m, up 18% on the year before, and profit before tax of $379m, up from $323m in 2009.

In a statement, the company said: "The board of Autonomy notes recent press speculation and confirms that it is in discussions with Hewlett-Packard regarding a possible offer for the company." Lynch stands to make $820m from the deal because of his 8.2% stake in the FTSE 100 company.

Tim Daniels, an Olivetree Securities analyst, said the takeout price would have to be approaching 30 per share, which is double the current price. "We don't think Mike Lynch would recommend a sale below top-dollar valuations, although once one move is made it would be possible that counterbidders would be [discussed]."

Autonomy's shares were among the top 10 fallers in the FTSE 100, ending the day down 8.3% at 14.29. HP's shares fell in afternoon trading to $30.13, from the previous close of $31.39.

Cablevision Bumps Wi-Fi Speed Significantly

Cablevision's member-only Optimum WiFi service now offers up to 15 Mpbs down and 4 Mbps up: The network is free to Cablevision's broadband subscribers, and restricted to them, although the firm also allows some roaming from other cable providers' customers, and has free and open hotspots here and there.

The company tells me it has 10,000s of access points in place across its New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut markets, along with 7,000 hotspots in business locations that are Cablevision customers. Over 500,000 Cablevision customers have used the network so far.

Wi-Fi networks, even at 802.11g speeds, can easily handle 15 Mbps over short distances. With 802.11n, 15 Mbps should be achievable over longer ranges.

Add a Windows 8 user tile to your Windows 7 taskbar

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it's only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they've spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there's a user tile displayed. If you'd like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.
