Controller Error (Event ID: 11) upon USB flash insertion

Whenever I insert my USB flash drive into my USB reader to do a SyncBackSE backup, I get an error message in the Windows 7 64-bit system event log of the form: "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk6\DR17".

If I reformat the USB flash drive, then the error message goes away. But if I perform another SyncBackSE backup, then the error message reappears the next time I insert the USB drive. I don't know if this is something peculiar to the way that SyncBackSE (5.11.3.0) copies the files, or if it is something else. It is not a problem when I use an SD card for backup, and does not seem to cause a problem with the USB drive except for the error message.
