External scripting , you mean (via Programs-Before/After, say)?

The concept is possible, I guess (check for lock file, if found, return abort-value to profile else make & upload lock file, return go-value to profile, then delete it afterwards) but you'd need to script it yourself, obviously (though anyone reading who can assist is of course free to suggest ideas)

But you need to remember the whole concept would not stop anyone using a different client (or a profile without the scripts)...or even any server-side underlying-storage file activity...

Report Indicates Obvious Wi-Fi Conclusions

I do not understand this report: I've read Epitiro's report, which does not disclose any funding source for it, and I'm baffled. The report measures Wi-Fi speeds versus wired LAN speeds for broadband connections. Naturally, Wi-Fi speeds are lower. Wi-Fi has far more overhead than Ethernet, suffers from interference, and drops in speed the further you are from a transmitter. That's been true since 802.11b premiered in 1999.

One of the report's authors is paraphrased by the BBC as concluding, "for those who invest in good quality wi-fi equipment and position it sensibly, the effects of the speed degradation would hardly be noticed." So. Why was this report written again?

I suppose the company, which has broadband providers among its customers, wants to be sure that there's awareness that you can have higher rates of speed from very fast broadband connections by plugging in. However, with 802.11n networks and the much faster flavors of broadband available, it's unlikely most people would notice at all.

The report indicates if you're too far from an access point, you might have trouble with Skype. Well, duh. This is general background Wi-Fi knowledge. Measuring it more precisely doesn't advance the body of information about how Wi-Fi works in a home.

HP sues former executive

Former Hewlett-Packard executive who has since joined Oracle is sued for alleged theft of documents

A former high-ranking executive at Hewlett-Packard is being sued for allegedly stealing hundreds of documents from the tech giant.

Adrian Jones, HP's former head of enterprise sales for the Asia region, now works for the tech firm's arch rival Oracle. His former employer claims Jones stole documents and emails on a USB device which contained proprietary and valuable information about HP's products and customers.

The lawsuit claims HP was about to fire Jones in February after an investigation into his relationship with a subordinate and spurious expense claims. The suit further alleges that Jones arranged for a 97% pay increase for the subordinate, and claimed several thousand dollars in expenses for visits to the subordinate that had no apparent business purpose.

According to HP, Jones resigned and joined Oracle before any action was taken. He is now Oracle's senior vice-president for Asia Pacific and Japan.

The lawsuit, filed in the California Superior Court in Santa Clara, California, calls for all the allegedly stolen documents and emails to be returned and damages to be awarded. According to HP, among the documents taken were financial plans, sales figures and employee data.

Once close allies, HP and Oracle became fierce rivals after Oracle's purchase of Sun Microsystems in 2009 pushed it firmly into the server hardware market, an area where the two had previously cooperated. Relations soured further last year when Mark Hurd was ousted as HP chief executive and swiftly joined Oracle.

The latest scandal echos Hurd's exit. Hurd left HP after an investigation of a sexual harassment claim uncovered inaccurate expense reports. The company concluded Hurd did not breach its harassment policy.

Larry Ellison, Oracle's founder, called the decision to oust Hurd "the worst personnel decision since the idiots on the Apple board fired Steve Jobs many years ago". A month after he quit, Hurd joined Oracle as president. Legal wrangling over Hurd's hiring are ongoing.

HP has a history of internecine legal battles. In 2006, it emerged that private detectives employed by the firm had posed as board members and journalists to obtain private phone records as they investigated leaks on the board. The scandal triggered a criminal investigation.

Apple may brand its rumored cloud services "iCloud"

Apple has reportedly been working hard to launch new cloud-based services for iOS and Mac users, including a revamped MobileMe and an iTunes-based "digital locker," all powered by a huge data center in Maiden, North Carolina. Now, a new rumor published Wednesday night suggests Apple may be calling its new services "iCloud."

According to GigaOm, a Swedish-based company called Xcerion had until recently been using iCloud.com to run a cloud-based storage service of the same name. Xcerion has just rebranded rebranded the service "CloudMe," and a source for GigaOm claimed that the iCloud.com domain name had been sold to Apple for $4.5 million.

Xcerion—not Apple or its domain name management service—is still listed as the domain owner in Network Solutions Whois database, so for now we consider this rumor plausible if unverifiable. Apple is believed to be launching its new services soon, since Apple has stopped selling new $99 per year MobileMe subscriptions. Apple is also believed to planning to discuss its digital locker service in early June at WWDC 2011.

I doubt anyone can tell you definitively. It would depend for one thing on the behavior of the SFTP server if two or more clients tried to access the same file. If the first one to try caused the server to lock the file, then the second one to try would presumably get a 'file in use' error, and that second profile would record a Failure because of it (but would carry on with the next file).

If the SFTP server did not lock the file, then conceivably corruption could occur, yes. It depends to a great extent whether both clients were trying to write at the same time, or one read, one write, but you could still get corruption (incorrect data) being read if the file was being written to at the same time as it was being read

Frankly I would arrange for segregation of access unless you're sure. Think about what would happen if somehow a corrupt file was created, then opened locally and edited (LastModified stamp changed, anyhow). It could happen that next time around, this corrupt/edited version looks the newest and gets propagated back to the SFTP server - and then to all the clients...
