Banshee music player now works in Windows, supports Amazon MP3 downloads

A few moments ago, version 2 of the Banshee music player for Linux was released, bringing with it a whole slew of new features, and the addition of an official -- but alpha-quality -- Windows build. The Mac OS X build of version 2 is due later today.

The most notable new feature is support for the Amazon MP3 store -- you can buy and download music from within Banshee -- but unfortunately it's only available in the Linux build at the moment (OS X and Windows support are planned, however). There have also been some significant improvements to artist, album, and queue interactions -- and yes, you can finally right click a track, album or artist and select 'play after' to insert it into the queue.

Beyond actual playback, the user interface has been tidied up -- it now looks a whole lot smarter -- and the Ubuntu One Music Store and SoundMenu extensions have been made official. For a complete list of changes, additions and bug fixes, check the change log.

When Windows support initially appeared in February, we found it rough around the edges and fraught with stability issues. With version 2, Banshee for Windows is still a bit unstable, but it's shaping up to be a good alternative to Winamp, iTunes, or whatever other music library manager you use. It's almost as attractive as its GNOMEish brother, too!

Angry Birds Rio for Symbian lands in Nokia's Ovi Store

Angry Birds is one franchise that sure gives new meaning to the word cross-platform. Angry Birds Rio, the latest installment in the bird-slinging series from Rovio Mobile, is now available in Nokia's Ovi Store, ready to fly to your Symbian device. Angry Birds Rio has so far been spotted on iOS, Android, and webOS.

As with the versions for all the other platforms, Angry Birds Rio for Symbian has a story that's a bit different to what fans of the franchise have seen so far. The original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to Rio de Janeiro, where they manage to escape their captors and subsequently set out to save their friends, Blu and Jewel -- two macaws that incidentally are also the stars of the movie Rio. The gameplay is mostly unchanged though, and you get two episodes right now, with more episodic updates promised, for free, in May, July, October, and November.

Angry Birds Rio is only available for devices running the 'new Symbian', also known as Symbian^3. At the moment, these are the Nokia N8, E7, C7, and C6-01.

Dear Wondering,

Good question! Google Wallet can seem pretty radical and a little confusing at first, but we're actually pretty excited about. Here's the lowdown on what it is, how it works, and what it means for your practical, day-to-day life.

What's Google Wallet?

Google Wallet is a new service that allows you to pay for things with your smartphone like you currently do with credit cards. When you're at a store, you'll just be able to tap your phone to a receiver and "scan" a digital version of your credit card to pay for things. The idea is that once the service becomes more popular, you won't have to carry a wallet full of cards wherever you go. Sure you may still need to carry one as a backup, but you'll be able to make many of your purchases just by pulling out your phone.

Can I Actually Use It?

Google Wallet hasn't officially launched yet, but at launch time, it will work at a number of different merchants, like CVS, Subway, RadioShack, and more—many of them even offering loyalty coupons when you use Google Wallet. To see all the places you can use it, check out Google's interactive map. Obviously, as time goes by more merchants will hop on board, but it already has a few places you probably shop at regularly, which is pretty cool.

Likewise, when it launches, Google Wallet will only be available on the Sprint Nexus S 4G. It will likely be rolling out to more phones, though, so more people will be able to use it in the future—just not quite yet.

How Does It Work?

The technology that makes Google Wallet tick—called Near Field Communications, or NFC—has been around for long enough that there are other MasterCard devices called PayPass you can carry around to get the same functionality. Google Wallet is just the first service bringing the functionality to smartphones.

At launch time, it will also work out-of-the-box with the Citi MasterCard, letting you charge items directly to your credit card by scanning your phone. However, you don't have to be with Citi to use Google Wallet—they've also set up a system where you can transfer money directly from your bank account to your Google Wallet account, which will then go toward your purchases. Citi is just the first bank to eliminate that middleman, and more banks will hopefully follow.

Google's also putting a stress on security for this release, since many people may be uncomfortable putting financial information on their phone. Google Wallet will only be accessible with your Google Wallet PIN, though, and the NFC chip in your phone is completely separate from your phone's memory, only allowing the official receivers to access your information. Obviously, if your phone is stolen, you'll still want to cancel your credit cards, but it's not really any different than if your wallet were stolen.

So, I Probably Won't Be Able to Use It for a While?

As of right now, only a few people will be able to use Google Wallet when it launches, and only at a limited number of stores around the country. However, the service definitely has a lot of potential, and we expect to see it (and possibly others like it) grow quite a bit in the coming months. Hopefully Google Wallet and NFC make a little more sense to you—it's something we think is pretty cool, and we're excited to see where it goes.

As Foreign Language Becomes More Prevalent NYC Students Suffer

Of New York City students who entered the school system in the first grade, only 36 percent were able to pass an English language proficiency test last year during the seventh grade, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Eva Moskowitz, a former city councilwoman requested the report from the Department of Education. She told the news source that it should not take a student six years to learn a language.

Out of the 1.1 million children who are enrolled in NYC public schools, the newspaper said 14 percent are English language learners. Approximately 20 percent of these students have come to the U.S. in the past two years, while approximately 70 percent have received six or more years of language lessons in the United States.

Nationally, the U.S. Census shows that more Americans arecurrently speaking a language other than English at home. In 1980, a total of 11 percent of the U.S. population reported speaking a foreign language at home. By 2000, that number jumped to 18 percent.

According to the Census, the most common languages spoken at home in 2000 were Chinese, French and German. Individuals who speak these languages but want to improve their English grammar may be interested in translation software tools.
