One crucial thing when attempting to recover a deleted file that was not mentioned in the reply is that you must stop using the drive on which the deleted files resides immediately. Do NOT shutdown windows (as this can cause the deleted data to be overwritten), but also do not write anything to the drive on which the deleted data resides.
When a file is deleted in the traditional way in Windows (i.e. not with data destruction software), all the data is left on the hard drive, however the space where the data resides is now marked as free space by Windows.
So if you begin writing new or rearranging old data on the drive (e.g. importing pictures, downloading music, getting email, defragmenting, even surfing the Net will write temporary files to the drive, ), the space where the deleted data resides may be overwritten. And the more data you write to the drive, the more likely that your deleted data will be overwritten.
What you need to do to prevent the deleted data from being overwritten is download a good file recovery application on another computer. It needs to be a self-contained application that can be run from an external device like a flash drive.
Plug the flash drive into the computer you want to recover the file from and run the program. If the application is self contained it will NOT prompt you with an installation window wanting to install itself on your computer. The application should simply run and ask you which drive you want to scan for deleted data.
Once the deleted data is found, make absolutely certain that you restore the data to a storage location (e.g. external device or separate hard drive partition) that is NOT a part of the storage location on which the deleted data resides! The file recovery app should have a built safeguard to prevent you from doing this, but just in case, I thought I'd give you the heads up.
