New record gap between Apple Store openings

It's been over 105 days since Apple has opened a new Apple Store, beating the previous record for longest gap between openings. The old record was set in 2003 and that gap extended between January and May. This gap began in November and will continue until we get a new store. ifoAppleStore has a great infographic that will help contextualize the break for you.

It could be tempting to say this hints at some kind of slow down in sales, but that conclusion can't be confirmed without a whole lot more contextual data. Since most of the Apple Stores open just before Thanksgiving, with a few more coming in around Christmas time, this is the time of year when we'd expect to see a slowdown anyway. The gap could just indicate that Apple did a great job of getting all their stores open in time for Christmas 2010. Let's see how things shape up in the last half of 2011 before we start to wonder about new Apple Stores.

Motorola's Android Tablet Locks Wi-Fi until 3G Service Purchased

Wi-Fi requires cell data sign-up: Engadget has a Best Buy ad for the Motorola Xoom that states you can't use the built-in Wi-Fi without having at least a one-month mobile broadband subscription. Well, ain't that a kick in the pants. This is in addition to the $800 price for the feature-heavy Xoom, which comes with front and rear cameras, 1080p playback, 3G service (with a 4G LTE upgrade promise), and Adobe Flash support.

But, really: You have to activate Verizon Wireless service, even if you then cancel it, to unlock Wi-Fi? Big misstep. It's along the lines of that common scene in a car dealership when you're about to sign the papers, and the sales regretfully informs you that his manager won't sell the car without the underbody rust inhibitor treatment.

(That's from before the auto sales collapse, for you youngsters.)

Update: On 24 Feb, Verizon Wireless announced it would not require activation to use Wi-Fi on the 3G models.

Technology bursary 'opened my eyes'

Frances Buchanan shares her experience of winning the Scott Trust Technology Bursary last year and encourages others to apply

In the summer of 2009 I was fortunate to be awarded a scholarship to facilitate the study of my MSc in Software Technology, by the Scott Trust, owner of the Guardian newspaper in London.

One of the main purposes behind that scholarship was to give the financial assistance and push to people who may otherwise be discouraged from taking on further education in technology. They encouraged applications from women who are, (according to the British Computer Society) recognised as being under-represented in the IT industry, to consider technology as a career.

Had I not been awarded the scholarship, it is likely that I would have delayed applying for my course (perhaps indefinitely!) so I am extremely grateful for the push that it gave me in deciding to just go for it. And I have no regrets.

The course was immensely enjoyable, as was the experience of being able to use my brain again after spending almost five years at home being "mummy". Although I had previously worked as a lawyer in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, there was a definite loss of confidence that seems to come with having children, and undertaking my MSc has gone a long way to rebuilding that confidence, as well as allowing me to pursue my long-held interest in all things IT. Next stop ? full time employment!

The scholarship not only funded my course at The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, but also offered me the opportunity to undertake a placement within the technology department at the Guardian's offices in London. In July 2010, when I was almost half way through my course, I spent four weeks with the Guardian, learning from the experts. This was quite a change for me, coming from rural Aberdeenshire where I live with my husband and two young children, but it was a great opportunity that allowed me to gain insight into how technology is applied in practice and how it is driving change in the news industry, and publishing in general.

The experience I gained while working alongside the Guardian developers wasn't restricted solely to programming, but I was treated to one-to-one sessions with a whole host of experts from a range of different fields ? including design, technology strategy, lead architect, business development, central production and analytics.

Each day brought new tasks and new insights: in particular, I assisted Simon Rogers in his role as Data Journalist at the time when the Afghanistan War Logs were released; I attended "morning conference" with high profile guests; I worked with developers and helped write tests and develop code in Java in a test-driven environment, something that was entirely new to me; I was given full access to the Guardian's API (the Open Platform) and while experimenting with that I managed to identify (and fix) a bug; and I had a long and interesting chat with Dan Catt about the technologies he used to build the Zeitgeist feature on the Guardian's website.

Overall, this experience opened my eyes to the potential applications of intelligent web technologies, an area in which I now have a very keen interest.

I am extremely grateful to everyone in the Guardian's Technology department who gave me their time and imparted their knowledge unconditionally and unhurriedly, and in particular to Huma Islam for organising it all.

To anyone who is dithering about whether to retrain in the field of IT, I would say to go for it ? if a lawyer from Aberdeenshire with two young girls aged two and five can do it, so can you!

? You can find out more and apply for a bursary at the Scott Trust site. The deadline for this year is 15 March. If you have any questions regarding the bursary, please email the Scott Trust.

App Review: Kamon is a great two-player strategy game, but a bit pricey

Kamon iPhone AppKamon (US$1.99 for the iPhone version) and Kamon HD for the iPad (available separately for $2.99) should really be one universal app. There isn't enough meat here to justify the five dollar price tag for both versions -- not when the top-of-the-line board games like the Settlers of Catan cost $4.99. Two dollars for a universal version sounds about right in today's App Store economy/price structure, but I also want more and more board games to come to iOS, and developers need to make their money somehow. So, with that in mind, I can recommend Kamon to anyone looking to expand their app library of well-designed two-player strategy games.

Kamon was created by renowned designer Bruno Cathala who was recently responsible for the particularly good game Cyclades. The elegant leather and wood version has been hard to find in the U.S., but now everyone has access to this simple (yet hard to master) game. Keep reading for more.

The silly season: Two fun, fan-made videos of the iPad 2

With all the buzz of anticipation of the iPad2 expected release on March 2nd I thought it would be fun to put up a couple of videos circulating the Internets on just what to expect.

The first one by Exkild is a full and detailed explanation of all the new magical features of the new 27" device. My favorite part of this 6:45 tour is expaining the new features in iTunes which will automatically download good music, delete bad music and if it finds a song by Justin Bieber, it self-destructs.

The second one is a 1:45 action movie opus made by Evan Larimore, a guy who is really into movies. A huge iPad2 with the eye of HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey descends from space and wreaks havoc in the hand-held style of Cloverfield.

Take a look. They're bound to give you a chuckle or two.

iTunes could get cloud-based backup solution

Late last year I predicted 2011 would be the year of the cloud for Apple, and so far I've been right. I said OS X Lion would be sold via the App Store, and it certainly will. Here's the other part of Apple's cloud strategy: the company is reportedly looking to use the cloud for iTunes, not as a streaming service, but as "insurance," a sort of backup system for the music you already own and have downloaded to your own computer. Specifics are vague; it's not clear how much this would cost or exactly how this would work, and obviously Apple is keeping it all under wraps until it's ready to announce the service completely.

The signs are there: MobileMe is reportedly going online-only, the North Carolina data center is about to come online, and Apple seems primed to introduce a service which would connect your media (and possibly even your contacts and other downloads) across all of your iOS and Mac devices, accessible from any device wherever you happen to have it. I'd bet such a service will be online by the end of this year. We'll have to see what comes of this, but we certainly seem closer than ever to Apple introducing some connection to the cloud in iTunes.

Peers or not? Comcast and Level 3 slug it out at FCC's doorstep

The big headlines about the dispute between Level 3 Communications and Comcast over the latter's access charges may have subsided, but don't let that fool you. Like so many telecom wars, this one has migrated to the antechambers of the Federal Communications Commission. There, both sides are battling over whether the feud comes under the FCC's authority via its still-unofficial net neutrality rules.

Capitol Corridor Train Finally Gets Its Wi-Fi

A California train line has onboard Wi-Fi funded: I have been writing about the Capitol Corridor line's efforts to get Internet access installed for five years. I wrote about the first RFP in 2006. The authority that runs the line ran tests with some providers, including EarthLink during that ISP's wireless networking days, but was never able to get the right combination of funds, vendor, and technology. But the dream never died.

Why? Because it's a route used heavily by commuters. It connects Sacramento (and parts north) to the Bay Area. The authority estimates 60 percent of riders carry laptops and and half have mobile broadband cards or dongles. (I love that the reporter calls them "air cards," which is both quaint and misguided. Sierra Wireless's modems are called AirCards—brand name—and somehow a decade ago that became the default and weird term for 3G modems.)

Service will be installed during 2011. One rider questions the nearly $4m being spent on the service, wondering if it could have been put to better purposes, such as better wheelchair access. That's a good question, but the point of Internet access is to bring more passengers on board. Train service is subsidized, of course, just like roads and airports, but adding passengers increases costs slightly relative to the additional revenue. If Internet service adds tens of thousands of additional trips per year, this can offset its cost.

The story misses a secondary point: the $4m is nearly the full capital expense for both passenger access and back-end operational uses, which incur separate costs—or simply don't exist, reducing efficiency or safety—today.

MLB At Bat 11 apps for iPhone, iPad now available

With the wintry weather that seems to be hitting a lot of the U.S. today, most people probably aren't thinking about the start of the 2011 Major League Baseball season. There are two sure signs of spring today -- the MLB players started playing Spring Training exhibition games today, and the MLB At Bat 11 apps for iPhone/iPod touch and iPad are now available for sale in the App Store.

At this point you'll be able to watch about 150 Spring Training games through a free preview of MLB.TV, and listen to available radio broadcasts of Spring Training games. Like the 2010 version of the app, you can get a close-up batter's view of every at-bat, breaking news, schedules, rosters, and players stats. The description of the app notes that additional features and functionality will be released for Opening Day on March 31.

Major League Baseball apparently didn't listen to user complaints from last year, however. The iPad and iPhone apps are still separate apps, and each costs $14.99. On top of that insult, the league advertises in articles found in the app. Once the MLB season begins, you'll be able to watch one free televised game per day and listen to as many games on Internet radio as you'd like, but there's no way to purchase a package to watch all games for a specific team in the app or beam the games to an Apple TV via AirPlay.

Early reviews on the App Store are saying that the performance of the MLB At Bat 11 app does seem to have improved over last year's iteration, which was notable for slow loading of articles and videos.

Compare Your Internet Cost and Speed to Global Averages [Infographic]

Internet pricing and speed varies wildly across the world. The US, for instance, currently ranks 15th in speed but enjoys reasonably priced internet access.

How reasonably priced? If you’re a US citizen you likely have an average internet access speed of 4.8 mbps and you pay a little over $3 per mbps. If you’re in Sweden, however, you likely have an 18 mbps connection and you pay a scant 63 cents per mpbs. The real envy of the internet speed Olympics by far is Japan with a mighty 61 mbps at a mere 27 cents per mbps.

Hit up the link below for the full infographic (or use this local mirror if you need to dodge a firewall), then sound off in the comments with how you compare on the international scale.

Joystickers provide a little tactile feedback on a touchscreen

Joysticker Classic

Do you want little tactile-feedback joysticks on your iOS-device screen? And do you want to be a founding financier of the company that produces them? You're in luck. Head over to the Kickstarter funding project of Chicago-based Joystickers, who want to muss up your shiny screen with tiny, sticky joysticks in order to improve the feedback you get in shooter and platform games.

The joysticks -- the inventors call them the Classic -- are held onto your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad or Android device with micro suction cups that won't damage your screen. Joystickers founder and engineer Anthony Cerra says the special sucker for the Classic is imported from Japan. According to Cerra, "Every detail of this product was custom manufactured to our specification -- even the spring." The spring itself is manufactured in Chicago and is designed for long-lasting durability.

Joystickers is looking for US$25,000 in funding by March 24, which will pay for injection molding production for the Classic and a stylus and paintbrush that they've designed. A $30 donation will get you a pair of Classics when production starts in May.

iFixit tears down the new 15-inch MacBook Pro, 2011 model

iFixit MacBook Pro 2011 teardown

iFixit got its hands on a brand new 15-inch MacBook and tore the machine down to its Tri-wing screws and heat sinks. The latest generation machine shares a lot of similarities with its aluminum unibody predecessors including the same case design and a similar layout of internal components. Most of the changes internally were made to the logic board components.

Besides the obvious processor and GPU differences, iFixit notes the wireless card now sports four antennas instead of a three which may improve performance. Other minor changes include the addition of a few extra heat sinks, including one for the GPU, a SuperDrive with a new model number and some modifications to the clips which hold things in place. Click through to check out more goodies from the iFixit teardown.
